About the Birney Beekeeper Alliance
The Birney Beekeeper Alliance is the collective name for both the PTA and the nonprofit organization supporting Alice Birney Elementary School in San Diego, California.
The PTA provides valuable parent/caregiver education and advocacy for all our kids. Want to learn how to keep your child safe on the internet or how to navigate summer camps? We're here for you. Should public schools be better funded? Provide more nutritious lunches? These are among PTA advocacy areas at the district, state, and national level.
Friends of Alice Birney Elementary (FOABE) is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization which serves as Birney’s fundraising arm. Funds raised by FOABE make it possible for all 530+ students at Birney to experience Birney’s IB programming - including classes in garden, dance, art/theatre/music and Spanish.
Despite their value, these classes at Birney face a stark funding gap - they are not funded by the San Diego public school district.
The cost to sustain these classes each year is $400 per student, a daunting goal in a Title I school environment where at least 40% of Birney students come from low-income households. Businesses in our community are vital partners helping us to provide these classes for all students.
Together, the Birney Beekeeper Alliance enriches our community with engaging programs, from free events like Passport to Adventure and Bedtime Stories to fundraising activities such as the Hive 5K Fun Run, University Heights Fall Festival, and Hive Scavenger Hunt.
